MGRES maintains the ability to export electricity to Moldova, according to PMR president Vadim Krasnoselsky
The plant can consistently generate additional capacity with increased gas supplies

Tiraspol, December 20. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. The Moldovan State District Power Plant (MGRES) in Dnestrovsk is physically capable of increasing electricity production, including for export to Moldova. However, to achieve this, the power plant must be supplied with sufficient gas, stated Pridnestrovian president Vadim Krasnoselsky in an interview with RIA Novosti.
The issue of the MGRES's technical capabilities was revisited after Moldova requested additional electricity from Romania, and residents were urged to conserve.
As a reminder, the Moldovan GRES is the leading electricity producer in Pridnestrovie. The plant's installed capacity is 2,520 MW. The MGRES consists of 12 power units and can operate on three types of fuel: coal, gas, and fuel oil.
It should be noted that in early December, due to military conflict in Ukraine, Moldova faced a significant energy shortage and requested additional electricity from Romania in an emergency mode. The country's authorities and Moldelectrica urged the population to consume electricity rationally (i.e., conserve). Urgent supplies from Romania will cost Chisinau much more than regular ones: their price could reach €400 per megawatt-hour. As a reminder, under the contract with the Moldovan GRES, Moldova once purchased electricity for only $66 per megawatt. Before the 2025 energy crisis, Moldova imported approximately 80% of its electricity from the Moldovan State Regional Power Plant. Since January 1, due to the interruption of gas supplies to Pridnestrovie, the Pridnestrovian power plant has not supplied electricity to Moldova. Currently, only technical flows exist between Moldova and Pridnestrovie; gas flows to Pridnestrovie are limited for household needs.
